Corzine's public service ad

Maybe it's the only thing a politician in his situation could do, but kudos to New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine for doing a TV and radio ad that is frank, efficient and essentially says "I was an idiot."

He doesn't try to evade or lay blame, or defend the indefensible. He acknowledged his mistake and urged others not to do so. And the final scene of him walking off on his double crutches said more than any moralistic tagline could have.

This is how adults behave when they make mistakes.

The guy wants to be president some day. What else is he to do after making such a bonehead mistake?

Oh, JP5. You know your reaction would be completely different if he was Republican.

No I wouldn't. The guy acted in every way as if he was above the law. I'm sure this wasn't the first time. And now---because of his horrible accident that almost killed him----he's forced to make a public apology for his behavior.

He's trying to save his political career, Sean! Hopefully he HAS really learned a hard lesson and means it. But the reality is......it's all he can do. If you think he doesn't have a public relations person advising him on this, you're pretty naive.

You must have missed my bipartisan list of elected leadfoots, including your own governor. Here's your chance to apply the above words to some Republicans, too.

He's forced to make a public apology for his behavior.

Like I said, a public figure doesn't have many choices in a situation like this. But it does matter how they handle themselves. Corzine apologized, said he'd made a mistake, paid for his recovery himself, etc. He didn't try to make excuses or shift the blame or suggest that criticism was politically motivated. And now he's done a very effective PSA. Credit where credit is due.
